U17 Provincial Women Win Bronze Medals...

The PEI Under 17 women's rugby team returned home from
the Eastern Canadian Rugby Championships held recently
in St John's, Newfoundland. "This was terrific
experience for the whole team" said coach Shannon
Atkins. Atkins
went on to say "these girls improved every minute
of every game, and will be great additions to their high
school teams next year.
It was a privilege to coach these girls who
played with such heart."
Here is a roundup of their weekend...
Friday morning - We played NL
and won 12-0. The girls were really just working out the
kinks in this game and certainly dominated, but only
crossed the line twice.
The new scrum-half Chelsea MacCormack shined in
this game and lead the team by e example.
Friday afternoon -
We played NB - the gold medal winners and lost
12-0. PEI dominated the play and the game until the last
5 mins. when NB scored all of their points.
We went there with only 14 players.
Which is one player short.
The other teams were kind enough to match us
player for player, but in the end we had no subs, and
the other teams did.
Fresh legs were our nemesis in the end.
Terra Profit one of our props proved that she
meant business in this game.
Saturday morning - We played
NS. This
was an intense and very aggressive
game.
The sideline referees were commenting on what an
"Edge" these young girls
had. The
game was played almost entirely between the tens, and
Jorie Rose and Brenda Benzies proved they were forces to
be reckoned with as tacklers.
Once again, in the end, they scored on us to make
it a 5-0 loss.
Sat afternoon - We were once
again matched up with NS in the crossovers. We
lost this game 12-0.
Both teams were losing steam at this point, and
many of our girls were playing on pure heart because we
had many injuries and no subs.
Sunday morning - We
played for the bronze medal game against NFLD.
We were down to just 12 players because of
injuries and lost one more shortly in to the game.
The girls proved once again how the mind can
control the body and played through injuries to win the
game 7-5 with a run through, 8 man pick try by Jorie
Rose and a fabulous conversion by Nichole Kelly.

Eastern Canadian Rugby Championships Results...

The PEI Canada
Games Men's Rugby squad lost a tightly
contested match to Newfoundland & Labrador team by a
score of 12-6 in the championship game at the Eastern
Canadian Rugby Championships in St. John's on the
weekend. The
PEI men gained a berth to the final with a 3-1
record with their only loss coming from a 14-7 loss to
the Rock (NL) in the opening game of round robin play.
NL scored first with a try in the 7th minute to go up
5-0 and quickly responded with another at the 12 minute
to go up 12 -0 at the half. In the second half PEI came
out strong an put NL back on their heels to close the
gap 12-3 in the 45th minute. PEI continued to push but
came up
short on
several scoring chances. The contest ended 12-6 after
another successful
penalty
kick from Llyr Morris. "We were able to come out
with good pressure on defence along with strong running
and ball
support offensively" says coach Ryan MacDonald. "It also
has given us a lot of confidence as we approach the
Canada Games in mid August."
